Chris Christie for Governor of New Jersey

by Nick Stone of Drawnlines Politics.

The people of the state of New Jersey have among the heaviest burdens of all Americans. Because of choices made by longstanding Democratic leadership, the state’s residents pay heftier bills than any of the other 49 states. They also have the highest unemployment in the region, in line with the national average of 9.8%. The state budget gap has only widened, exponentially increasing public debt over the past decade and a half. To fill the void, state lawmakers and Governor Corzine have proposed even more spending, borrowing, and higher taxes.

Corzine’s governance has been so awful that he has had to bail out his own campaign, using mostly his own personal wealth to finance his re-election. Perhaps this approach isn’t surprising from an ex-Wall Street wizard from the old school powerhouse Goldman Sachs. The same firm that nearly bankrupted America with its voodoo accounting games seems to have spawned the kind of leadership that threatens to bankrupt the state of New Jersey. Indeed, in 2006 Corzine promised to bring Wall Street to Trenton. That is one promise he made good on, with interest.

The Wall Street Journal’s Jason Riley writes, “After a decade of Democratic governance, the state is a fiscal train wreck. New Jersey sports the nation's highest state and local tax burden, and residents pay more property taxes per capita than anywhere else in the country. Nevertheless, lawmakers have repeatedly borrowed billions to fill budget gaps and increase spending. The state's debt has quadrupled, to $35 billion from $8.1 billion, over the past 15 years. Since 2003, New Jersey's budget has grown by 26% and annual payments on outstanding loans have nearly doubled. Asked to name the most important issue in the race, 54% of likely voters cite property taxes, the most popular response by far.” New Jersey also has the nation’s highest auto insurance rates, and arguably the highest health insurance rates.

The state of New Jersey doesn’t have a revenue problem. It has a spending problem, exacerbated by its leadership vacuum. The people of New Jersey cannot afford to wait any longer. Changing New Jersey must start by changing governors this Election Day. Though this election will certainly be seen as a referendum on Governor Corzine, New Jerseyans should be thankful that there will be a choice on the ballot worth voting for as much as there is an obvious choice to vote against. One name on the ballot will reflect a man that has fought for the soul of New Jersey all of his political life.

Chris Christie will make an excellent governor for every New Jerseyan.

Christie has a long record of fighting corruption in New Jersey at all levels. As Attorney General, he took down crooks from both parties. Christie has brought justice to powerful party bosses and saved the state billions of dollars by locking up white collar felons with only their own best interests at heart. Now, he’s running for governor to bring that kind of change to the governor’s mansion.

The people of New Jersey are shouldering a burden they can’t continue to carry. Chris Christie will take a hatchet to the state budget by promoting efficiency, cutting through layers of bureaucracy, removing unnecessary government and regulation, and eliminating pork. To fill revenue shortfalls, Christie will promote prosperity and jobs by encouraging new business startups and reversing the bloodletting of jobs to other states. New Jersey’s job climate has suffered under burdensome regulation and taxation, and Christie is the man to turn that stigma around.

Chris has partnered with an excellent running mate, Monmouth County Sheriff Kim Guadagno. Together, this unbeatable team will bring together experience and vision to turn Trenton around. The duo has earned the support of environmental groups, minority leaders from around the state, and local business associations. They have earned the respect and trust of the people who create jobs and make New Jersey a safe and enjoyable place to live.

You may have read charges that Christie doesn’t have a concrete plan to reduce state spending. While the candidate readily admits that he will rely on the advice of key advisors like Sheriff Guadagno on important budgetary matters, the candidate has proposed a 53 point plan to turn New Jersey around. His plan includes specific proposals to reduce spending, eliminate bureaucracy and improve efficiency in state government. Christie is a proven fighter, and his history suggests that he won’t shy away from tough battles to champion the people of New Jersey. He will run up the scoreboard on the legislature.

Along with their base Republican support, Chris and Kim tout the approval of many independent voters, as well as a sizable slice of NJ Democrats who know how critically the state needs a new direction. The group Democrats for Chris Christie says, “It’s time for the minds of Democrats to open up to new ideas.” They claim Chris Christie is “the right man for the job.”

Drawnlines couldn’t agree more. On Election Day, please remember that a vote for Chris Christie is a vote for the future of New Jersey. This is one vote New Jerseyans simply cannot afford to get wrong.
