Drawnlines Congratulates Robert Wexler (no, really)

by Nick Stone of Drawnlines Politics.

Drawnlines Politics would like to congratulate Congressman Robert Wexler D-FL for his acceptance of a new post as president of the Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation.  Wexler announced his imminent vacancy at a press conference at 10 a.m. yesterday.  While many voters in the district have been cited on local radio and television as being upset with Wexler for resigning his post early, there is something to be said for a rare opportunity to carve out policy in such a hands-on way.  It must have been awfully hard to turn down, partisan politics aside.

As a seven-term member of the US House, Wexler earned a reputation as a loud and fierce advocate for liberal causes.  The "Fire Breathing Liberal" wore the label as a badge of honor.  The target of attack for not maintaining a regular residence inside his district, Wexler also took heat for his leadership as an early supporter and Florida co-chair of Barack Obama's presidential campaign.  His district went heavily for Clinton despite the congressman's support for Obama.  The congressman was instrumental in settling the 2008 delegate dispute at the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee (concluding a result that Drawnlines strongly denounces, incidentally).  He also called for the impeachment of the President Bush, along with other colorful career highlights.

The father of several children near college age, and a man who is not independently wealthy, it deserves to be said that Wexler will enjoy a significant bump in standard of living (though his new salary has yet to be released).  He will also be able to keep his focus on a subject he has championed for decades, that of a strong and peaceful Israel (and Middle East).  For him and his family, we wish him well on his pursuits as a key policymaker in a tumultuous part of the world.  The work for which he is about to embark could not be more critical, and we sincerely hope he can be instrumental in supporting our nation's long time friend and ally, Israel.  We sincerely call on all Americans to support and congratulate the outgoing congressman as he goes forth to carry out a critical and daunting task on our behalf.  This is and should be one of those "country first" moments.

As for Wexler's heavily-Democratic district, Governor Crist is expected to call a special election to fill Wexler's January vacancy.  In low turnout special elections, results can often be surprising.  Congressional candidate Ed Lynch should be expected to mount a strong showing, particularly if the metrics of the race tilt as heavily in Republican favor as now looks probable.  Again, anything can happen in these circumstances.

Shalom, Congressman Wexler.  Farewell on your next journey.

There's ALWAYS something new happening at Drawnlines Politics.
