GLBT Republicans Look Forward to 2010 with Local Candidate
FORT LAUDERDALE, fla. – The up and coming Sunshine Republicans – GOProud will host their third monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 16 at Fort Lauderdale City Hall at 7 p.m.
The November meeting for the GLBT Republican group will be focused on the upcoming 2010 midterm elections along with local candidate for Congress Ed Lynch. Lynch is running in a special election to fill the vacancy left behind by Congressman Robert Wexler, a Democrat leaving office in January to take a foreign policy job in Washington.
Showing support for the club and candidate Lynch will be Chip Lamarca, chairman of the Broward Republican Executive Committee (BREC). Chairman Lamarca and Club President Ben Lewis will be unveiling GOP-U, a program dedicated to growing the ranks of the Republican Party starting with next year’s midterm elections.
With Lynch as a model, the Sunshine Republicans feel confident that 2010 might look similar to the landslide of 1994. According to club President Ben Lewis, “We feel that Ed Lynch is a great example of the exciting candidates we have going into next year.” But Lewis acknowledges that the GOP has some ground to make up from heavy losses in 2006 and 2008. “We’re going to take back our home turf, and take some of theirs too!” he says, referring to the Democrats.
If last week’s elections are any indicator, things are already looking up for the GOP. With two big wins in New Jersey and Virginia, Republicans across the country are breathing a little bit easier as we inch closer to the next election cycle. The GOP had historically high fundraising numbers in September, and enthusiasm seems to side with the Republicans. Historic trends of incumbent parties losing seats in off-year elections also seem to favor Republicans.
The Sunshine Republicans claim the momentum going into next year. “By next November, the honeymoon will be well over and the hangover will be here,” said club Vice President Nick Stone. “Already, people notice that Congress is spending money like drunken sailors and it’s not creating jobs or wealth. The president can keep making up numbers if he wants, but all of these laid-off people will have plenty of time to cast ballots next year. We Republicans will work very hard to convince them to take a chance on us when they do.”
Lewis feels particularly strong about the GOP’s position. “Eventually, policy trumps personality. People personally like the president, but his economic policies are a disaster in terms of job creation and growth. With 10.2 percent of Americans out of a job, record foreclosures, and a soaring deficit, people are going to start asking questions.” On the implications of a continued downturn, he added, “Look, a lot of people took a chance on this president last year because they were frustrated and he promised change. But things have gotten worse, not better. If he doesn’t produce tangible results by this time next year, voters are going to hold him accountable at the ballot box.”
“The message voters send is going to sting,” said Stone. “I believe that President Obama loves his country, but he clearly doesn’t know what’s best for his countrymen.” On economic policy, Stone adds, “Whether it’s Cap and Trade, Obamacare, or even the stimulus, the president is squashing growth at every step. We’ll never put people back to work if Washington makes it harder to buy, produce, and sell products.”
The Sunshine Republicans welcome Ed Lynch as an example of the clear vision and strong character that the GOP will field to turn the tide in 2010 and beyond. At tea parties, town halls, and campaign events around the country, the silent majority is waking up. People who have strayed from politics their entire life now feel compelled to speak out against the Obama-Pelosi policies that are hurting our economy. Our club is proud to welcome candidates like Ed Lynch who believe in a free market and entrepreneurship as the engine of growth that lifts all Americans. Beginning with the “No Dems in ‘10” roadmap of GOP-U, our growing club’s members are confident that the GOP will be the natural home of voters from all walks of life. We hope you’ll join us on Monday and at future events.
