Why I'm Supporting Charlie Crist (and why you should too)

I’m writing today to my conservative friends who are considering whom to support in Florida’s US Senate race for 2010. Over the next several months you will hear impassioned pleas for your support from both candidates. Please take a moment to understand why I’m so passionate about standing behind Charlie Crist.
I used to be a Democrat. Before you brush that off as a reason to run the other direction, keep reading. As a lifelong conservative who ventured to the Democratic Party in my adolescence, I was appalled by the sharp left direction that my party took over the past several years. After nominating Barack Obama as our presidential candidate, I couldn’t stand with my party anymore. As Ronald Reagan once said of the Democrats, “I didn’t leave my party behind. They left me.”
Over 2008 and 2009 a few Republicans caught my eye with their common sense conserve leadership. One was John McCain. Another was Charlie Crist. These men fought tough battles for truly conservative principles like balanced budgets and reduced spending. They fought with the opposition and their own party to cut loopholes and sweetheart deals. Time and time again these men stood for consumers, workers, for families and progress. I’m proud to tell you that men like Charlie Crist led me back to the Republican Party. I'll never look back.
You’ve surely heard a lot of talk about Governor Crist’s record. After comparing rhetoric versus resume, I’m certain that you’ll find yourself firmly in Charlie Crist’s camp for the US Senate campaign. The governor has used his veto pen to make tough cuts when Speaker Rubio and the legislature couldn’t. He kept cops and firefighters and teachers on the job while also cutting burdensome taxes on Florida’s consumers and homeowners. And Charlie Crist improved Florida’s schools, infrastructure and safety during one of the worst economic downturns in state history.
If that’s not common sense, conservative leadership, I don’t know what is.
Marco Rubio’s campaign has proven that he is in this campaign for one person: himself. Rubio issues constant venomous attacks against our Republican governor and other party members. Portraying himself falsely as a Ronald Reagan conservative, the insurgent candidate makes dubious claims about his own record while knocking down any Republican in his path. Rubio has attacked his own party’s leadership while simultaneously undermining GOP goals. Is this the kind of Republican we want representing Florida?
Charlie Crist is the man I’m counting on to run a principled, conservative campaign with a resume to back it up. But please don’t take my word for it! Take a look at both men’s careers and decide for yourself. When you do, I’m confident that you’ll stand with Charlie Crist.
Thank you for your time and consideration. May God bless you in the New Year!
