The Obama Albatross

by Nick Stone of Drawnlines Politics.

Tonight the people of Massachusetts voted for change. Voters chose Republican Scott Brown over Democrat Martha Coakley by a margin of 52-47 in the bluest of blue states known to some as the California of the east.

Last weekend, President Obama descended upon Massachusetts to campaign for Coakley amid shifting poll number in the Republican’s favor. The man that brought record numbers of new voters and atmospherically high donations to his party was dispatched to buoy his fellow Democrat. But did president Obama help Coakley?

Polling conducted after the president’s visit indicates that not only didn’t Obama save Coakley, but he didn’t even stop her bleeding. In fact, the election shifted from a dead heat to “leans Republican” after his departure. Nationalization of the race it seems helped the opposition. Oops!

But should spectators be surprised by the disappointing results from “The Savior”? To those who have truly been watching, the answer is a strong and stern “no”. This week’s result in Massachusetts is only the latest in a string of tailspins related to the Obamatization of elections. President Obama was in the end the same to Coakley as he was to the late Corzine and Deeds: an albatross around her neck.

Politicos well remember that when the Virginia governor race of 2009 became regarded as a national barometer, Democrat Creigh Deeds plummeted in the polls. This came after Obama was the first Democrat to take Virginia’s electors since “Landslide Lyndon” in 1964. But the man who did the impossible for the Democratic Party in 2008 lost his luster in the state that took a chance on him less than one year previous. In the fall of 09, even Washington suburbs which had trended Democratic for years swung back into the GOP column to support incoming Governor Bob McDonnell against the Democratic Obaminee.

Even in the face of an abysmal record in his first term, some Democrats began to come home to Governor Jon Corzine in the fall of 2009. Republican Chris Christie slid from a 15 point lead to a dead heat in the heavily-Democratic state of New Jersey. Energized by the outside chance of a victory on their home turf, Democrats called on “The One” to land Air Force One in the Garden State and campaign for their embattled governor. After duel Obama rallies for Corzine across the state, Corzine’s numbers crashed. By Election Day, Christie sailed to a victory resembling this week’s results.

Make no mistake about it: Democrats control all levers of government. The White House and both chambers of Congress, the state governorships and state legislatures, the circuit courts and state courts are all left-leaning. If this country is on the wrong path, it cannot be blamed on the GOP or the previous administration.

Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and President Obama have chosen an unpopular agenda for our nation. Americans overwhelmingly disapprove of Obamacare, Cap and Trade, the array of new taxes currently under consideration, and the record spending in Washington. These trademarks of the Age of Obama are the albatross around the neck of Democrats running for office in 2010 and 2012.
