David Cameron: Today's Thatcher Awaits his Reagan
Big Society, Culture, David Cameron, Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, Tories 12:00 PM
by Nick Stone of Drawnlines Politics.
Conservative principles of government often find themselves without a charismatic, forward-thinking spokesman. This perennial quandry often plagues conservative governments on either side of the Atlantic.
That rut comes to a screeching halt with the arrival of David Cameron's term as prime minister. His leadership is exactly what Britain needs to turn its budget around, ignite its economy, and strengthen her world standing. We should announce the arrival of Cameron's "Big Society" by warning Labour to quickly find the exit signs and prepare for decades in the minority.
At the annual Tory conference last week, Cameron laid out a breathtaking articulation of his party's road map out of the British wilderness. With their situation strikingly similar to that which confronted Margaret Thatcher upon her 1979 election, Britons hope that Cameron's coalition government with Lib-Dem leader Nick Clegg will make the hard choices and radically change the British situation.
Want to be blown away by a smart, realistic, and pertinent take on conservative principles? Read excerpts from his Big Society speech courtesy of the NY Post.
For conservative leaders and conservative voters waiting in the wings, this speech serves as Cameron's call to arms. It's time to roll up our sleeves and radically transform the people's relationship with their government. In Cameron's own words, "We are the radicals now." This is conservative government at its finest.
Note to Americans: Time to find our Reagan, quickly.
