The Egyptian Uprising

As the world sits and watches the uprising in Egypt, some will agree that history is repeating itself. In 1979 while President Carter sat on the sidelines the world watched as protests and demonstrations against the Shah of Iran took place. The Shah had become too “westernized” and too friendly with the US for some extreme factions in Iran. The result was that the Shah went into exile and the Islamic Republic of Iran was established under the Supreme Leader Khomeini.
Flash forward 32 years and protests are breaking out in the streets of Egypt as President Mubarak is being called to resign. President Obama sits on the sidelines as Carter once did and history is repeating itself. Once again the world watches a leader who has been friendly with the US begin to lose control. Some would argue that Nobel Peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei’s, who is leading the demonstrations, is asking for nothing more than Democracy. 10,000 protesters gather in the streets to hear ElBaradei as he speaks of the beginning of a new Egypt. As Americans we can understand why anyone would want to live in a Democracy but we have to wonder what will happen if President Mubarak is overthrown. Who else is behind the revolution in Egypt?
A little research reveals a group that has been outlawed in Egypt who is fighting alongside ElBaradei and has met in private with him. The group is known as the Muslim Brotherhood and they have made it known that they want a more prominent role after the uprising, when the Islamic state of Egypt is formed. Secretary of State Clinton has discussed the threat that is posed if the Muslim Brotherhood is able to seize the movement and impose their ideological beliefs. The Brotherhood is a Muslim fundamentalist group that is anti-American. On one hand they have preached that violence is not the way to spread Islam yet Hamas has branched from this organization and comments from their leaders have been anything but peaceful. “Egypt’s unrest will spread across the mid-east and Arabs will topple leaders allied with the United States.” –Khaled Meshaal, Muslim Brotherhood Leader.
Did we learn nothing from the Iranian Revolution?
