Democrats Declare Victory in NY-26

Fox News - Dem. Kathy Hochul declared victory in NY-26 special election
Democrat Kathy Hochul edged out Republican Jane Corwin in a special election in House District NY-26 yesterday. The heavily-Republican district would ordinarily be a cake walk for Corwin, but several factors broke against her. First, Democrats scared the hell out of old people by making the race a national referendum on Medicare reform. Second, Corwin faced an independent and wealthy Tea Party candidate that split her support base. And third, chaos struck when a member of her campaign kamikaze-attacked the opposition and was caught on camera. The Republican campaign machine went into overdrive to execute GOTV operations in the final days of the campaign, but efforts did not erase Corwin's deficit. Hochul's vote tally as of this morning stands at 47%-43% according to Fox News, although some 6,000 absentee and military ballots remain uncounted.  Despite a GOP lawsuit to block certification, it appears clear that Hochul will head to Washington to fulfill the term of disgraced Congressman Chris Lee.
