Shop Small & Support Local Business

The Shop Small movement is interesting for two reasons: First, that it is sponsored and promoted by American Express, a huge company. Second, that it is an example of the free market at work. With the help of zero politicians and zero taxpayer dollars, Americans are going out and pumping life into local economies. Of course, many politicos have spoken out in support of the idea. Even President Obama has encouraged Americans to spend in mom and pop stores this weekend. But the true genius of the movement is it's basis in free markets, without government intervention.
Amex is banking that shoppers will join the cool kids in support of a small business this Saturday and use their American Express card while they're at it. To sweeten the deal, they're offering a $25 statement credit if you register your card in advance and use it to purchase items from a small business. The consumer feels good about helping their local economy and the creditor gets the cha-ching of the cash register - plus interest in some cases.
Don't have an American Express card yet? Well, well, well. The good folks at Amex would be more than happy to sign you up as a happy and loyal customer. You tell yourself you're helping a greater cause. They know you're a fish in a barrel.
But feeling good about yourself isn't the only reason to shop small this Saturday. According to Forbes, there are five good reasons to participate. With the Facebook guide to shopping local, it's also easy to find the hidden gems in your community. Not only is American Express helping you find a new favorite store, they're also helping local business owners find you with free marketing materials.
Support local jobs, local products, and good old fashioned American entrepreneurship. Take the pledge and join me in shopping small this Saturday.
