Earth in Retrograde. Fasten Seat Belts.

by Nick Stone of Drawnlines Politics.

The world is upside down this news cycle.  Watching my astrologer, I thought he might tell me that two planets had collided or Mars had gone retrograde again.  But alas, the real calamity in the solar system appears to be happening right here on Earth.

Last night the Florida House of Representatives passed SB 6, the colloquially known "Teacher Merit Pay Bill" at 2:30 a.m. last night after hours upon hours of question and debate in favor and opposed.  I woke up to headlines in the news this morning that Governor Crist, a strong supporter of the bill as recently as the middle of this week, was now considering a veto on the bill.  Seriously, Charlie?!

Not to be outdone on the "crazy factor" I came home this afternoon from running errands only to find Sarah Palin making what could not more transparently be her unofficial campaign kickoff in Louisiana.  Yes, she even threw in a "Go Saints!"  Incidentally, she was on top of her game today big time.  She also played UP the scribble on her hand, rather than shrugging it off.  And the majority of her speech was dedicated to none other than energy.  Doncha know, Sarah was going for the jugular today and by all accounts she got it.

About half way through her address, President Obama came on the tv to announce that he had spoken to Justice Stevens who will be retiring at the end of the current Supreme Court session after all.  While President Obama announced in clear terms that he would be interested in a candidate with a good personal story rather than one who - you know - gives a damn about the law, he also threw in an (paraphrase alert) "Oh yeah, and what a tragedy in West Virginia.  Oops."   Incidentally, I'm going to skip this extremely tempting chance to point out the failures and unintended consequences of government regulation that are the essence of the West Virginia story.

While Uncle Barack is delivering platitudes about miners' families, the scroll at the bottom of the screen tells me that Bart Stupak will not be seeking re-election in 2010, though he considers the Obamacare bill an important and proud part of his legacy.  Gag!  So proud that you can't look your constituents in the eye and ask for their support again after you shafted them, congressman?!

Immediately following the Stupak announcement, the scroll tells me that Senator Lemieux from Florida (shout out required) has indicated that he expects imminent announcements of further Senate retirements.  Hopefully a few of these Democratic senators under fire (like Boxer, Feingold, or Gillibrand) will be the names mentioned.  Cross your fingers.

  1. Really? Sarah Palin is great at riling up an under-educated pliable base. Her talking points and commentaries have no substance, though. Not to mention she has demonstrated a clear and willful disinterest in actual policy matters.
